The Aldwych and Strand Theatres together were built as a pair on either side of the magnificent Waldorf Hotel.
The theatre initially had 4 levels of seats, but now only 3 levels are used.
The theatre is linked with "The Aldwych Farces" - a series of farces by Ben Travers who performed here from 1925 to 1933 and also The Royal Shakespeare Company who made Aldwych Theatre their home from 1960 till 1982 when the group moved to the Barbican Theatre. Recent productions are of Noel Coward's "Private Lives" with Joan Collins, award winning Royal National Theatre's production JB Priestley's "An Inspector Calls", the highly appreciated revival of Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" starring Diana Rigg and David Suchet, and the very much criticised, short-lived musical "The Fields of Ambrosia".
