The Cambridge Theatre is known as a modern theatre facing seven dials and is especially noted for its sophisticated and crisp lines of design, which are made out of steel and concrete.
The theatre was renovated in 1950, with addition of candelabras and chandeliers while the actual gold and silver décor painted over in red. Although in 1987, the Cambridge Theatre was restored to its original form by Carl
Toms.
This London theatre has mainly seen its production either by short runs, which were interspersed with dark periods and was used for showcasing trade film shows in the late 1930s and then again for cinema in 1969. Tommy Steele in "Half a Sixpence" in 1963, Kander, and Ebb musical "Chicago" in the late 1970’s ran for 590 performances, which are amongst the highly praised ones. September 1989 saw the opening of the rock' n' roll musical “Return to the Forbidden Planet” which was based on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” and continued till the early 1993. This performance also won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, vanquishing the favourite, "Miss Saigon".
