The Lyric Theatre, located on Shaftesbury Avenue, is the oldest among all the surviving theatres at this place. The Lyric Theatre was designed by architect C J Phipps and opened its doors in December 1888. The foyers and bar areas of the theatre were completely redocorated in 1932-33 and the exterior was refubrished in the year 1994.
The Lyric Theatre was originally built for impresario Henry J Leslie as a home for operetta. The theatre has successfully hosted a number of drama, comedy and musicals.
In 1950 “The Little Hut” by Andre Roussin ran a successful 1261 performances with Robert Morley in the main cast. Alan Ayckbourn''s “How the Other Half Loves” ran here for 869 performances in the year 1972. More recently, a musical based on the songs of Louis Jordan, “Five Guys Named Moe” had a very successful run here since 14th December 1990 and running until 4th March 1995. Presently the Lyric Theatre is owned by Max Weitzenhoffer and Nica Burns.
