The Wyndham’s Theatre is located in Charring Cross Road, London. It was designed by the popular designer W.G.R. Sprague. The Wyndham’s Theatre was opened by the actor/manager Charles Wyndham. This theatre can accommodate upto 759 spectators in three levels. It was opened on 16th November 1899 in the presence of the Prince of Wales.
It was the dream of Wyndham that became true with the admiration of a patron and the financial confidence of friends. A revival of T.W.Robertson''s David Garrick was the first play ever performed here. Gerald du Maurier began an association with the theatre that lasted for fifteen years. It included the stage debut of the screen goddess Tallulah Bankhead. In January 1954, a small-scale musical pastiche, Sandy Wilson’s ‘The Boy Friend’, was moved to the Wyndham stage and ran for 2078 performances. This theatre provided a setting for stars such as Alec Guinness, Vanessa Redgrave and Diana Rigg during the sixties and early seventies.
Godspell, which was a blockbuster of the decade came to the Wyndham’s Theatre in January 1972 and ran upto October 1974. The original cast of this show included David Essex, Marti Webb and Jeremy Irons. The world premiere of The Ride Down Mount Morgan by Arthur Miller and the British premiere of Edward Albee''s Three Tall Women, starring Maggie Smith were shown here.
Twenty-five years after making her debut here, Diana Rigg returned to play a hugely successful season as Medea. The critically acclaimed comedy, Art by Yasmina Reza began its record-breaking run at the Wyndhams in 1996 with Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stott in the cast. It ran up to October 2001. In 2002, Madonna made her West End debut here, performing in a sell-out production of Up For Grabs. After this many other dramatic productions including "Dinner" and the National Theatre''s "Democracy" during 2004, Holly Hunter in "By The Bog Of Cats" ran here successfully.
Most recent productions thatran in the Wyndham’s Theatre include a sold out run of Up for Grabs, starring Madonna, Vincent in Brixton directed by Richard Eyre, The Play What I Wrote, Auntie and Me starring Alan Davies, Franco Zeffirelli's production of Absolutely! (perhaps) starring Joan Plowright and Oliver Ford Davies, Dinner by Moira Buffini, the National Theatre production of Democracy and most recently a short season by Dylan Moran. In September 2005, the theatre was taken-over by Cameron Mackintosh''s Delfont-Mackintosh Ltd. who is running the theatre from October 2005 onwards.
